“We set ourselves up for what happened [i.e., failure in Iraq the first year after the U.S. invasion] when we violated two principles…for [military] success. One is unity of command. The other is mass [of forces]….”

Summary. This week is the next installment of the digital marketing study in Tijuana. The sample-set studied consists of a dozen local institutions primarily dedicated to economic development in greater Tijuana. The first reading that follows is a must for start-ups since the young and the restless have a lot to learn about marketing. The other two highlight how Tijuana Innovadora and San Diego do more for Tecnojuana than Tijuana herself.

  • San Diego Regional Development Corporation (SDRDC; inglés)
BLUF (i.e., bottom-line, up-front): Tijuana desperately needs one and only one leader to catalyze her renaissance.
Conclusion. Though half the sites rank competitively with respect to popularity, bounce rates (i.e., immediate exits by users due to unattractive landing-pages) are likely to be high given mediocre content, poor design and diverse technical issues. The two best sites – those of Tijuana Innovadora (TjInno) and San Diego Regional Development Corporation (SDRDC) – set regional best-practice standards for the others to emulate.

Estado Actual.
Current Panorama. Put diplomatically, these findings indicate a wealth of opportunity for the marketing efforts of economic development agencies across the region. Unacknowledged possibilities for fund-raising and talent inflow still exist, at least for another 12-15 months. For such prospects to be conceivable depends upon these entities teaming up.

Only through pooling resources behind a univocal message can the city hope to compete as one of the five or six smart-manufacturing axes in the next decade. For Tijuana to enter that race against forty or so other metropolitan areas vying for that coming élite, she will need to better the efforts of places like Seoul, Istanbooty, Cape Town, Medellín, Vancouver and New York.
¡Pobre Tijuana!
Yet Tijuana is currently an already-also-ran, ranking anywhere from sixth to twenty-ninth among Mexican cities for business-friendliness. The latter rank falls squarely on poor municipal leadership; the youngsters and their start-ups, along with Tijuana Innovadora, can not make the renaissance happen by themselves. This is a shame in view of comparative advantages unique to Tijuana.  It almost seems that people would rather see everybody else fail rather than celebrate anyone’s success.
Analysis. Stacked up against the worthy example of TjInno and SDRDC, the fundamental challenge facing the other ten agencies remains their limited and stale content that almost certainly drives away many users. Many sites fail to prune their writings over time, unleashing Frankenstein monsters of cacophonic content rampaging across local cyberspace. In fairness, budget constraints may explain the difference in quality among the sites and of priorities among their sponsors.

Five of every six sites also have technical drawbacks, most often from stupid coding underlying a site that fails to be aligned with the marketing strategy of the larger organization. The majority of social media efforts do not aid the marketing effort; others should suspend the social media until a later date.
The most defining difference between the sites of the BIG-TWO – SDRDC and TjInno (far and away the best) – and the little-ten is the fact that each of the dynamic duo has operating leadership drawn largely from the private sector. The ever-present profit-motive exerts a disciplined focus on continuous improvement and increasing professionalism.
As one may surmise, TjInno faces an extreme challenge of seasonality between bi / triennial events. Yet, it uses the web-site skillfully in the manner it should be: as a tool to engage its loyal and large following through a double helix of content and social media enticement. Both agencies exude value.

Most of the remaining sites are not bad but open to evolving upwards from mere info-portals to marketing platforms. With better design, refined through A/B tests of key pages – together with integration of key-words, content and coding – these sites can become just such platforms. Under the guidance of visionary collective leadership, they can be so much more.

EL ABC DEL MARKETING DIGITAL PARA PYMES
A-B-C digital marketing 1-2-3, easy as A-B-C for SMEs
We have all heard of the “4-P”s of marketing: product, price, promotion and point-of-sale. The inter-net has some-what obsolesced this hangover from Madison Avenue, much as it has the old maxim of retail being all about location, location, location. Since the inter-net market is largely virtual, other dimensions are becoming more important.

Prospects and customers need to be engaged as intelligent counterparts, not as passive targets. The digital advertising firm, KLAMA of Cataluña, has very kindly created this alphabet of digital marketing which is both enter-taining and fun. The items for Q,X,Y,Z are added.

This list specifically applies to small and medium entreprises, or S.M.E.s. While each concept is crucial to your success, you take what you want when you need it as you move through “Dizzy Land”.

A = Audience. That means: for whom the bell tolls on-line? That requires thinking through what your goal is as it concerns the public with whom you seek to interact. How do you want people to respond? Which is your core versus secondary market?

B = Budget. Before diving into the visions animating your digital strategy, it is wise to have a budgeting constraint firmly established. Constraints often make you more creative.

C = Content.  All hail! Content as King! Content marketing (i.e., using ad copy and visual props to carry the message across the web and catalyze sales) remains the primary means of attracting prospects to convert some into sales.
D = Domain. The url (www.xyz.com.mx) may seem like a trifling detail; it is not. You must feed the beast (search engines) with a domain-name that fits your market, language(s) and prospects.

(Ver “Strategy”.)
E = Exceptional Narrative. People will click through and buy less often because of what you are marketing or even its brand-power than your ability to make your personal case a compelling cue to act. Storytelling is your unique content mobilized across various networks.
(See “Storytelling”.)

F = Fact-basis. With people constantly exchanging opinions, information and content, brands survive this frenetic competition for attention through being reliable, honest, relevant and accessible. After all, what and how you serve your prospects and clients gets around.
G = GOOGLE. You must keep in mind that, in México, some 91% of the on-line search activity flows through GOOGLE. The GOOGLE-bot (the little algorithm that crawls through your site to evaluate it) is the best reference point in aiming your digital strategy. Think like GOOGLE when you are coding your site to position your site as best you can.

H = HTML. To feed the GOOGLE-bot, it is best for you to code in the HTML pro-gramming language/protocol. Again, this is a pragmatic trade-off of saucing up the food the beast likes to eat. In any case, the content must good, too; GOOGLE-bot wants nutrition, too!

I = Inbound Marketing. Marketing by attraction, rather than promotion. The typical buyer starts his product search on-line and progesses 70% of his way along the purchasing path before he comes to you directly. She must be engaged by your site from the outset or she will be wooed away by a rival.

K = KPI. Key performance indicators (e.g., click-through rates) give you data to fine-tune your digital platform and tactics. How you measure-&-improve, not the data, is what counts here.

L = Leads. So you have made a good first impression with a jazzy landing or entrance page? Your work has just begun! It is important to engage inter-net consumers into your sales funnel (as leads) by making key contact and other data easy to see and easier to use.

M = Market Reputation. Traditional branding remains a worthwhile exercise for those who have a billion dollars and a few years to build the brand. Digital marketing is the middle-world of building a name-in-the-market through your platform to attract new customers, often by the service given to current ones.
N = New Technologies. Digital branding (i.e., building the market reputation) has to evolve along with the communications among you, your clients, your target audience et al. New technologies, like smart-watches and the inter-net of things, will force you to adapt your tactics continually with new activities.

O = Originality. Brands, as mnemonic icons on our cerebral desk-tops, buzz inside our heads every day. Set yourself apart from, and above, your competition with a value-driven message.

P = Persona. The ‘Persona’ is a concept carried over from traditional advertising that is basically a composite personality (i.e., set of preferences and values) of everyone in your audience. Bottom-line: local S.E.O. requires many personae.

Q = Quejas y Dudas
Q = Queries and Complaints. There is no getting around customer complaints or tough questions. Respond promptly and in a positive, straight-forward way and try to resolve problems in a public manner. This disciplined approach is time-consuming but shows prospects that you are attentive and trustworthy.

R = R.O.I. Return on investment measures revenue dollars per dollar spent on digital marketing. Analytics identify those sales sourced digitally. It is the inverse of the ratio of ad-expense to sales. Known also as “Marketing R.O.I.”

(Ver “Exceptional Narrative”.)
S = Strategy. Strategy is the heart and soul of your digital marketing effort. Without it, you are unlikely to align the resources, coordinate the content and disseminate the information necessary to gain prospects, let alone sales.
(See “Estrategia”.)

T = Transparency. A thumb’s-down, customer complaint or misleading information from you flies through web instantly. You are competing in a global market backed under the unforgiving scrutiny of a continuous accountability. Be forthright, always.

U = User Friendliness. Ongoing main-tenance avoids piece-meal inscrutability. You only have a second or two engage your site visitors before they “bounce” (or migrate) to a rival site.

V = Visits. Visitors to your web-site may be one-time ricochets (i.e., those who ‘bounce’ by leaving the site without going onto a second page) or, hopefully, recurring visitors for repeat sales or moving along the purchase cycle.
W = Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is a nick-name for the second generation inter-net that has accelerated e-commerce by enabling users and companies to exchange information interactively. Web 2.0 is catalyzing a disintermediation within information based industries like real estate or securities brokerages. Web 3.0 will emerge as the inter-net of things where customers and vendors collaborate to yield the final product.

X = Xolos
X = Xolos. The Xolos are the fútbol (soccer) team for Tijuana. If you want your customers to “give a boot” about your web-site or products, you need to make your message local, often distinct in several markets. One platform does not fit all. A generic site is virtual blight.

Y = Yahoo!
Y = Yahoo! Well not Yahoo! exactly but as a proxy of the importance of visionaries (like Marissa Mayer) taking distinct, often divergent ideas, and integrating them into a disruption. Your web page must do the same as a micro-disruption to make you unique and uniquely propitious for careening users.

Z = Zoológico
Z = Zoo. The digital world is like “Night at the Museum” on steroids, except that this feeding frenzy is for real. Going from containment (of competition) to flexible response is a do or die proposition. Calmly guide your customer through the bot-driven bedlam from A-to-Z.

Dentro de Tijuana Innovadora
Inside Tijuana Innovadora
Cross-Border, Multicultural Event Works to Revive the Image of Tijuana and the Border Region
The cities of San Diego and Tijuana go beyond sharing their geography — they share a culture all their own due to the social environment that is created in the region, even though they both belong to separate and drastically different nations. With this in mind, leaders active in media, economics and politics interact to create a social and multicultural event — Tijuana Innovadora 2014.

Tijuana Innovadora is an international event that began in 2010 with the involvement of entrepreneurs from the region to bring to reality the idea of the event’s president and founder, Jose Galicot. The goal was to repair the image of Tijuana, damaged by a long trend of negative media coverage about the city’s challenges, which had built a bad reputation of the city among non-residents. The objective is to focus on Tijuana’s strengths and virtues in areas such as science, technology and culture, and to revive the pride of belonging to the residents of the region.

The most recent Tijuana Innovadora was held from Oct. 16 to Oct. 27, with the Tijuana Cultural Center as the main venue, in addition to some alternative venues such as the Caliente Hippodrome, where installations focused on the Mexican diaspora. The event served as a stage where the economic, political and social aspects of Mexico and the United States merged, originating opportunities for young entrepreneurs to generate new businesses.

Numerous political, cultural and business figures were on hand, such as Ron Huldai, mayor of Tel Aviv; Bill Richardson, former governor of New Mexico; Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York; Ryan Graves, co-founder of Uber; among others. Personalities from diverse facets of society were also there, from fashion designers to pro wrestlers, world-renown chefs to Formula One drivers, filmmakers and border region political representatives including Kevin Faulconer and Jorge Aztiazaran, San Diego and Tijuana mayors, respectively.

“It’s a great chance also for San Diegans to discover the opportunities that Tijuana offers to our common goal opportunity truly start right here in Tijuana,” Faulconer said at the inauguration of this year’s event edition. Thousands of people from both sides of the border and international visitors converged on CECUT, Cultural Center of Tijuana, to participate in the workshops and conferences.

The wide range of activities encompass a culinary battle, a highly competitive event, involving some of the region and world’s finest chefs Baja’s cuisine inspired by the products of Baja’s oceans, mountains and valleys, simulating the model of the famous “Iron Chef” competitions. A 5K evening run promoted the spirit of sport enhanced with glow paint, music and lights. There was also a Mega Hackathon, an experience created by Tijuana Innovadora where 3,000 people broke the world record for the most number of people developing apps at one time.

This year, Tijuana Innovadora worked to ensure the prosperity of the border region by creating a binational atmosphere designed to create a connection with industry, arts and government from California to work together in an effort to shape a more productive and sophisticated region across the border. In this third edition, Tijuana Innovadora showed itself as one of the most important events in terms of contributing to the community through the encouragement of collaboration as a society, not only politically, but beyond frontiers to build a better community for the future.

It has the lowest un-employment rates in the country, with an average of 3.5% over the last 10 years. Tijuana has maintained lower inflation rates than the national average, and has kept a very competitive cost of living index - more than half of Los Angeles.

Between 2004 and 2008 Tijuana’s biomedical device sector grew 38% to over 27,000 employees - nearly 4 times larger than that of San Diego or Seattle, and almost equal to the total employment in Canada’s entire medical device industry.

Tijuana has a labor pool of nearly 650,000, including bi-national professionals from San Diego, Baja and others. Of Tijuana’s 175+ maquiladoras with over 250 employees, more than 90% have ISO quality certifications.
